About this Museum

The South African Sendinggestig Museum is located in an old mission church building that dates back to 1801. It was not originally used for worship services, and was therefore not called a church, but a “gestig” or “oefeninghuis” which is the Dutch equivalent of a “meeting house”. It eventually became a church with a congregation that included Khoikhoi and slaves who converted to Christianity. In 1975 the church's congregation was forced to move to a new location in Belhar due to the Group Areas Act.
